What is a Platform Bed? - MOTIF Modern LivingPlatform Bed
For many people, the phrase Platform Bed brings to mind low, European-styled wooden structures without footboards where the mattress rests upon wooden slats, similar to a futon. Today, it is commonly used to refer to any bed that does not require the use of a box spring.
They can be standard height or only a few inches off of the ground. Some don't have a headboard at all, while others have full-sized headboards and footboards. They can be constructed from MDF, wood, steel or a combination of materials. Many are now even upholstered with microfiber or leather.
Besides their clean, modern look, platform beds are desirable to the budget conscious since there is no box spring to purchase. The mattress on a platform bed is fully supported by wooden or steel slats, sometimes along with Masonite or wood panels. Most people are surprised that they cannot feel a noticeable difference in firmness without a box spring.
